River and Sea Flowers is a local family farm growing certified organic flowers on beautiful Westham Island just outside Ladner BC, 30 km from Vancouver. We live and work on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Tsawwassen, Musqueum and other Hun'qumyi'num' speaking peoples. The flower farm is run by Rachel Ryall and her staff, with a helping hand from her husband and other family members.
We grow specialty cut flowers supplying florists, a CSA, our farmstand, farmers markets as well as DIY weddings and other events. Our flowers are grown with love and care from seed to bloom. We begin the season with seeds sown in the winter carrying right through till summer, with flowers arriving in the spring and overflowing into the fall.
The farm is situated on Westham Island, right at the mouth of the Fraser River where it flows into the Salish Sea. It sits upon rich agricultural land and the island's surrounding tidal marshes are an important site for migratory birds. Over the course of the year our farm is shared with great blue herons, sandhill cranes, snow geese, Canada geese, bald eagles and various hawks, owls and ducks amongst many other avian species.
River and Sea Flowers is certified organic by the Fraser Valley Organic Producer's Association. We believe that organic flowers are better for the health of those who bring them into their homes to enjoy, for those growing and selling them as well as for the health of our environment. Our farm also provides habitat for vulnerable native pollinators and beneficial insects. We support biodiversity by growing multitude of different crops with areas set aside for wildlife. Careful crop rotation prevents disease and the buildup of pest populations. We build healthy soil with cover crops, compost and low till techniques and practice careful water conservation. In short we grow vibrant healthy flowers the best way we can!
The property is also home to Rachel's sister Lydia and her business, Cropthorne Farm. Cropthorne grows organic vegetables for local farmers markets, a farmstand, a CSA and restaurant and wholesale accounts. Rachel and Lydia's parents also farm this land raising organic pastured laying hens.
